Getting-a-Millionaire's-Mindset

http://finance.yahoo.com/banking-budgeting/article/105624/Getting-a-Millionaire's-Mindset

Let's face it; we all don't make millions of dollars a year, and the odds are that most of us won't receive a large windfall inheritance either. However, that doesn't mean that we can't build sizeable wealth — it'll just take some time. If you're young, time is on your side and retiring a millionaire is achievable. Read on for some tips on how to increase your savings and work toward this goal.

Stop Senseless Spending

Unfortunately, people have a habit of spending their hard-earned cash on goods and services that they don't need. Even relatively small expenses, such as indulging in a gourmet coffee from a premium coffee shop every morning, can really add up — and decrease the amount of money you can save. Larger expenses on luxury items also prevent many people from putting money into savings each month.

That said, it's important to realize that it's usually not just one item or one habit that must be cut out in order to accumulate sizable wealth (although it may be). Usually, in order to become wealthy one must adopt a disciplined lifestyle and budget. This means that people who are looking to build their nest eggs need to make sacrifices somewhere — this may mean eating out less frequently, using public transportation to get to work and/or cutting back on extra, unnecessary expenses.

This doesn't mean that you shouldn't go out and have fun, but you should try to do things in moderation — and set a budget if you hope to save money. Fortunately, particularly if you start saving young, saving up a sizeable nest egg only requires a few minor (and relatively painless) adjustments to your spending habits.

Fund Retirement Plans ASAP

When individuals earn money, their first responsibility is to pay current expenses such as the rent or mortgage expenses, food and other necessities. Once these expenses have been covered, the next step should be to fund a retirement plan or some other tax-advantaged vehicle.

Unfortunately, retirement planning is an afterthought for many young people. Here's why it shouldn't be: funding a 401(k) and/or a IRA early on in life means you can contribute less money overall and actually end up with significantly more in the end than someone who put in much more money but started later.

How much difference will funding a vehicle such as a Roth IRA early on in life make?

If you're 23 years old and deposit $3,000 per year (that's only $250 each month!) in a Roth IRA earning an 8% average annual return, you will have saved $985,749 by the time you are 65 years old due to the power of compounding. If you make a few extra contributions, it's clear that a $1 million goal is well within reach. Also keep in mind that this is mostly interest — your $3,000 contributions only add up to $126,000.

Now, suppose that you wait an additional 10 years to start contributing. You have a better job and you know you've lost some time, so you contribute $5,000 per year. You get the same 8% return and you aim to retire at 65. When you reach age 65, you will have saved $724,753. That's still a sizeable fund, but you had to contribute $160,000 just to get there — and it's nowhere near the $985,749 you could've had for paying much less.

Improve Tax Awareness

Sometimes, individuals think that doing their own taxes will save them money. In some cases, they might be right. However, in other cases it may actually end up costing them money because they fail to take advantage of the many deductions available to them.

Try to become more educated as far as what types of items are deductible. You should also understand when it makes sense to move away from the standard deduction and start itemizing your return.

However, if you're not willing or able to become very well educated filing your own income tax, it may actually pay to hire some help, particularly if you are self employed, own a business or have other circumstances that complicate your tax return.

Renting Versus Buying

At some point in our lives, many of us rent a home or an apartment because we cannot afford to purchase a home, or because we aren't sure where we want to live for the longer term. And that's fine. However, renting is often not a good long-term investment because buying a home is a good way to build equity.

Unless you intend to move in a short period of time, it generally makes sense to consider putting a down payment on a home. (At least you would likely build up some equity over time and the foundation for a nest egg.)

Buying Expensive Cars

There's nothing wrong with purchasing a luxury vehicle. However, individuals who spend an inordinate amount of their incomes on a vehicle are doing themselves a disservice — especially since this asset depreciates in value so rapidly.

How rapidly does a car depreciate?

More from Yahoo! Finance:

Millionaires in the Making: One Couple's Story

How Secure Is Your Bank's Web Site?

The Best (and Worst) Ways to Raise Fast Cash

Visit the Banking & Budgeting Center

Obviously, this depends on the make, model, year and demand for the vehicle, but a general rule is that a new car loses 15-20% of its value per year. So, a two-year old car will be worth 80-85% of its purchase price; a three-year old car will be worth 80-85% of its two-year-old value.

In short, especially when you are young, consider buying something practical and dependable that has low monthly payments — or that you can pay for in cash. In the long run, this will mean you'll have more money to put toward your savings — an asset that will appreciate, rather than depreciate like your car.

Don't Sell Yourself Short

Some individuals are extremely loyal to their employers and will stay with them for years without seeing their incomes take a jump. This can be a mistake, as increasing your income is an excellent way to boost your rate of saving.

Always keep your eye out for other opportunities and try not to sell yourself short. Work hard and find an employer who will compensate you for your work ethic, skills and experience.

Bottom Line

You don't have to win the lottery to see seven figures in your bank account. For most people, the only way to achieve this is to save it. You don't have to live like a pauper to build an adequate nest egg and retire comfortably. If you start early, spend wisely and save diligently, your million-dollar dreams are well within reach.

History
In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast which is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. This harvest meal has become a symbol of cooperation and interaction between English colonists and Native Americans. Although this feast is considered by many to the very first Thanksgiving celebration, it was actually in keeping with a long tradition of celebrating the harvest and giving thanks for a successful bounty of crops. Native American groups throughout the Americas, including the Pueblo, Cherokee, Creek and many others organized harvest festivals, ceremonial dances, and other celebrations of thanks for centuries before the arrival of Europeans in North America.

WaMu 5.00% APY 1-Year CD Rate (HOT!) at Best CD (Certificate of Deposit) Rates, Money Market Rates, High Interest Accounts

A few weeks ago we had a huge discussion about WaMu’s secret in-branch rates.
Now, Washington Mutual has quietly rolled out a killer 5.00% APY interest rate on their 12-month and 13-month CD accounts.
Although I strongly believe that this rate hike is a sign of desperation (have you seen their stock lately?) from WaMu, this yield is so awesome that it’s not going to stop me from opening an account. Just be sure to stay within FDIC insurance limits!
Rumor is that this promotion is valid until 8/29/2008, so keep that in mind if you are interested in this.

Chiranjeevi launches 'Praja Rajyam '

Chiranjeevi launches 'Praja Rajyam '

Tirupati (PTI): In true cinematic style, Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi launched his party 'Praja Rajyam' before a mammoth crowd of his fans and supporters pledging to work for social justice as its main agenda and to root out corruption.
He made the much-awaited announcement in this temple town in filmy style after a long speech and a short dialogue session with the assembled gathering. Soon after he announced the name a short song and sequence came on the giant screen behind him on the dais which the few lakh audience lapped it up enormously.
The 53-year-old matinee idol and son of a police constable outlined his party's vision in various sectors and also unveiled the party flag -- green and white with the sun in the middle - amidst rapturous applause from the huge gathering.
In his more than hour-long speech, the megastar, however, skirted thorny issues like Telangana statehood demand, naxalism and categorisation of Scheduled Castes, saying a "collective decision" would be taken on these matters after "scientific evaluation".
"On these sensitive issues, I cannot take an immediate decision. We will take inputs from intellectuals and come to a collective decision", Chiranjeevi told the gathering at the sprawling 120-acre Avilala Tank.
Chiranjeevi, a Padma Bhushan awardee, has acted in 148 films. Former President A P J Abdul Kalam had inspired him to take a plunge into politics and vowed to bring about positive change in politics.
Earlier, excited over their matinee idol's political debut, Chiranjeevi's fans went out of control at the site of the public meeting leading police to lathicharge on them. Thousands of Chiranjeevi fans, who poured in from all over Andhra Pradesh to listen to their star revealing the name and agenda of his party, swamped into the chamber which was alloted for physically challenged people. Chiranjeevi said his party would work for the empowerment of poor and weaker sections of the society. Touching upon a string of socio-economic issues, he said Praja Rajyam would accord top priority for agricultural development and welfare of farmers, primary health, education, labour welfare, opportunities for youth and women. The actor, who was the sole speaker at the more than two-hour-long meeting, also promised to come up with a clear-cut policy on regulation of liquor trade. "Fighting corruption, particularly the political corruption, will be one of our main agenda," Chiranjeevi said. "Change and Social Justice" appeared to be the mantra of mega star as he unveiled his political vision before the gathering. "Today, we are sounding the bugle for a major battle against the social ills. There are no leaders in the battle but only servants. I am your servant. We will win this battle. No one can stop us," Chiranjeevi said with a dramatic flourish.
On the raging demand for separate Telangana state, Chiranjeevi appeared to tread a cautious path. Attributing the backwardness in Telangana region to the failure of the successive governments, he said, "if the division becomes inevitable, we will co-operate and assist the process. Let us respect the sentiments of the region which has suffered neglect in all sectors."
Chiranjeevi, who hails from the backward 'Kapu' community, said his party would also work for "additional reservations" for the economically backward among the forward castes. Invoking Kalam's pet concept of PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas), he said Praja Rajyam would strive for realising the dream of "Gram Swaraj." Referring to the controversy over Special Economic Zones, he said his party would oppose acquisition of farm lands for SEZs.
"While we are for industrialisation, we will not allow fertile lands to be taken over in the name of development. We will also oppose selling away of government lands," Chiranjeevi said.

Fall Equinox

In the language of science, an equinox is either of two points on the celestial sphere where the ecliptic and the celestial equator intersect. For the rest of us, it's one of two times a year when the sun crosses the equator, and the day and night are of approximately equal length.

At the autumnal equinox (Sept. 22, 2008, 15:40), the sun appears to cross the celestial equator, from north to south; this marks the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.

Cyber Monday History and Deals

The term Cyber Monday refers to the Monday immediately following Black Friday, the ceremonial kick-off of the holiday online shopping season in the United States between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas."Cyber Monday" symbolizes a busy day for online retailers.

Also known as "Black Monday".

The term "Cyber Monday" is a neologism invented by Shop.org, part of the U.S. trade association National Retail Federation. It was first used within the ecommerce community during the 2005 holiday season. The term was coined based on research showing that 77% of online retailers reported a significant increase in sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving in 2004.

Black Friday shopping History and Deals

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, where it is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season.

In the late 19th century and early 20th century, many Santa parades, Thanksgiving day parades were sponsored by department stores. These include the Toronto Santa Claus Parade sponsored by Eaton's and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade sponsored by Macy's. Department stores would use the parades to launch a big advertising push. Eventually it just became an unwritten rule that no store would try doing Christmas advertising before the parade was over. Therefore, the day after Thanksgiving became the day when the shopping season officially started.

Many merchants objected to the use of a negative term to refer to one of the most important shopping days in the year. By the early 1980s, an alternative theory began to be circulated: that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss for most of the year (January through November) and made their profit during the holiday season, beginning on the day after Thanksgiving. When this would be recorded in the financial records, once-common accounting practices would use red ink to show negative amounts and black ink to show positive amounts. Black Friday, under this theory, is the beginning of the period where retailers would no longer have losses (the red) and instead take in the year's profits (the black).

Ahmed Faraz was born in Nowshera (Pakistan) on January 14, 1931. One of the leading contemporary poets, Ahmed Faraz has a simple style of writing with which the common man can identify with. Ethnically a Pathan, Ahmed Faraz studied Persian and Urdu at the Peshawar University.

Outspoken about politics, he went into self-imposed exile during the Zia-ul-Haq regime after he was arrested for reciting certain poems at a mushaira. Kindle: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device

Three years ago, we set out to design and build an entirely new class of device—a convenient, portable reading device with the ability to wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers. The result is Amazon Kindle.

We designed Kindle to provide an exceptional reading experience. Thanks to electronic paper, a revolutionary new display technology, reading Kindle’s screen is as sharp and natural as reading ink on paper—and nothing like the strain and glare of a computer screen. Kindle is also easy on the fingertips. It never becomes hot and is designed for ambidextrous use so both "lefties" and "righties" can read comfortably at any angle for long periods of time.

We wanted Kindle to be completely mobile and simple to use for everyone, so we made it wireless. No PC and no syncing needed. Using the same 3G network as advanced cell phones, we deliver your content using our own wireless delivery system, Amazon Whispernet. Unlike WiFi, you’ll never need to locate a hotspot. There are no confusing service plans, yearly contracts, or monthly wireless bills—we take care of the hassles so you can just read.

With Whispernet, you can be anywhere, think of a book, and get it in one minute. Similarly, your content automatically comes to you, wherever you are. Newspaper subscriptions are delivered wirelessly each morning. Most magazines arrive before they hit newsstands. Haven’t read the book for tomorrow night’s book club? Get it in a minute. Finished your book in the airport? Download the sequel while you board the plane. Whether you’re in the mood for something serious or hilarious, lighthearted or studious, Kindle delivers your spontaneous reading choices on demand.

And because we know you can't judge a book by its cover, Kindle lets you download and read the beginning of books for free. This way, you can try it out—if you like it, simply buy and download with 1-Click, right from your Kindle, and continue reading. Want to try a newspaper as well? All newspaper subscriptions start with a risk-free two-week trial.

Kindle’s paperback size and expandable memory let you travel light with your library. With the freedom to download what you want, when you want, we hope you’ll never again find yourself stuck without a great read.

We're very proud to introduce Amazon Kindle and we hope you like it as much as we do.

Cricket Marshall shoots 12 sixes to set new world record

West Indies' Xavier Marshall has become the first batsman in cricket history to hit a dozen sixes in a one-day match as he blasted 12 sixes enroute to his unbeaten 157 against Canada here.
The Caribbean batsman's incredible feat destroyed a 12-year-old record as he eclipsed Sanath Jayasuriya's record of 11 sixes set in 1996.

22-year-old Marshall also plundered 11 fours and clubbed with Leon Johnson and Brendan Nash in 128-run and 111-run partnerships to guide West Indies to set an imposing target of 303 in 50 overs.

Vijender loses in semis; settles for bronze

Boxer Vijender Singh could not convert India's third Olympic medal from bronze into silver or gold by losing his middleweight (75kg) bout here on Friday.( Watch )

Vijender lost 5-8 to Cuban Emilio Correa Bayeaux in a closely contested semi-final at the Workers Gymnasium, but his will be the first-ever boxing medal for India.

Both the losing semi-finalists are awarded bronze.

Emilio, a two-time Pan-American Champion, was clearly the better boxer on view with his quick footwork and reach. To Vijender's credit, he fought gallantly to carry the bout right into the fourth round, though the portents were clear that the Cuban had the edge by the end of the third round.

Vijender, who conceded a 0-2 lead in the first round, fought back brilliantly in the second round to reduce the margin to 3-4. But Emilio came back strongly in the third round and scored three points to take a big lead of 7-3.

In the fourth and last round, Vijender tried his best, but the Cuban made sure he stayed in the lead with his passive movements. A warning to the Cuban fetched the Indian two more points, but Vijender could not really launch himself and went down 5-8.

Vijender's bronze is the third medal in what turned out to be the best Olympics for India. Last week shooter Abhinav Bindra gave the country its first ever individual gold while wrestler Sushil Kumar won the bronze Wednesday.

Crush with Lyrics by David Archuleta

Crush with Lyrics by David Archuleta

I hang up the phone tonight
Something happened for the first time
Deep inside
It was a rush, what a rush
Cause the possibility
that you would ever feel the same way
About me
It's just too much, just too much

Why do I keep running from the truth
All I ever think about is you
You got me hypnotized, so mesmerized
And I just got to know

Do you ever think
When you're all alone
All that we can be
Where this thing can go
Am I crazy or falling in love
Is it really just another crush
Do you catch a breath
When I look at you
Are you holding back
Like the way I do
Cause I'm tryin, tryin to walk away
But I know this crush aint goin away, goin away

Has it ever cross you mind
When were hangin, spending time girl,
Are we just friends
Is there more, is there more
See it's a chance we've gotta take
Cause I believe that we can make this into
Something that will last, last forever, forever

Do you ever think
When you're all alone
All that we can be
Where this thing can go
Am I crazy or falling in love
Is it really just another crush
Do you catch a breath
When I look at you
Are you holding back
Like the way I do
Cause I'm tryin, tryin to walk away
But I know this crush aint goin away, goin away

Why do I keep running from the truth
All I ever think about is you
You got me hypnotized, so mesmerized
And I just got to know

Do you ever think
When you're all alone
All that we can be
Where this thing can go
Am I crazy or falling in love
Is it really just another crush
Do you catch a breath
When I look at you
Are you holding back
Like the way I do
Cause I'm tryin, tryin to walk away
But I know this crush aint goin away, goin away

Find Labor Day Getaways and Special Events

Since 1884, the first Monday in September has been a holiday in the US, as a tribute to workers; Canada has the same, (though it's spelled "Labour Day.") Many other countries have International Workers Day -- May Day-- instead, commemorating past struggles for workers' rights.

To most people in North America, however, Labor Day is above all the last-blast of summer fun, and --for many schoolkids-- the last day of freedom before Back to School. And even though many school districts now start classes in August, Labor Day long weekend is still a five-star farewell to summer time.

Below you'll find getaway packages and special events for Labor Day 2008, which falls on Monday Sept. 1st.

Henry Cejudo - Olympic Wrestling Champ - Gold Medal

Olympic Wrestling Champ Henry Cejudo Embodies The American Dream
The long, low-slung wrestling room at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs is not a welcoming space. There are no windows or air conditioning. Sweat streaks not only the mats but also the padding on the walls. During a typical two-hour practice session for the men's freestyle team, when the activity of roughly 30 wrestlers pushes the temperature well over 80°, the atmosphere gets downright ripe. The only sounds, besides the commands of coaches, are the grunts of combatants, the thuds of falling bodies and the occasional yelps of pain. It is a room in which the weak don't stand a chance.
In a far corner Henry Cejudo is hard at work. The reigning national champion at 121 pounds (he won his second straight title in Las Vegas in April) and a resident athlete at the OTC since the fall of 2004, he has thrived in an environment that has broken wrestlers with sparkling résumés from some of the best college programs in the country. He punctuates every grueling practice by lifting weights or running a quick three or four miles around nearby Memorial Park afterward. Cejudo, who was born in Los Angeles to then illegal immigrants from Mexico City who met in the U.S., is the toughest wrestler in the room. He's also, by his sport's standards, just a boy -- a few months past his 20th birthday -- and the youngest member of the U.S. national team. Last year he lost in the finals of the world team trials to 36-year-old world bronze medalist Sammie Henson, who remains his top rival for a spot on the 2008 Olympic squad.
Cejudo (pronounced say-HOO-doh) is a prodigy of the sort rarely found in the U.S. freestyle program, which typically doesn't get its hands on wrestlers until they've completed their college careers. He burst onto the international scene in November 2005 while still a senior in high school, winning the New York Athletic Club Holiday International after defeating '04 NCAA champion Jason Powell of Nebraska in the quarterfinals and dominating junior world champion Besik Kudukhov of Russia in the semis. Five months later Cejudo became the first high schooler to win a senior national championship since USA Wrestling became the sport's governing body in 1983. "He is the future of wrestling," says U.S. freestyle head coach Kevin Jackson. "He's going to win a lot of world and Olympic titles for us and for himself. We expect him to wrestle until 2012 or 2016 and dominate the world."
That would be fine with Cejudo, who will be the No. 1 seed in his weight class this weekend at the world team trials in Las Vegas. Henson has missed time with a knee injury, leaving a hole in the weight division that only Cejudo seems ready to fill. At 5' 4", he is a compact mass of muscle and focused aggression. Since he began wrestling in junior high, he has thought of little else but winning world and Olympic championships. Indeed, he is obsessed with those goals, driven by a desire to prove himself to the world, as well as to a father he never really knew.

Vijender Kumar creates history; India assured of another medal

Beijing, Aug 20: Pugilist Vijender Kumar created history on Wednesday after he became India's third medal winner at the Beijing Olympics. Vijender defeated Carlos Gongora of Ecaudor, assuring him an entry into the semi-finals as well as at least a bronze medal. Wrestler Sushil Kumar had won a bronze in the freestyle event earlier in the day.

Vijender, competing in the 75 kg middleweight category, dominated the entire bout, eventually winning 9-4. The win has ensured that India will come back from Beijing with its biggest ever Olympic medal haul. This is India's first ever Olympic medal in boxing.

Vijender had earlier stormed into the quarter-finals of the 75 kg middleweight Boxing event on Saturday after he outclassed Thailand's Champuphuang Angkhan 13-3 in a one sided match.

Vijender thoroughly dominated his bout to tame Angkhan Chomphuphuang of Thailand 13-3 to sail into the quarterfinals of the 75kg category event.

Though the Thai managed to land a punch on Vijender in the second round, it was too little against the marauding Haryana lad did enough to stretch his lead to 6-1.

The third round saw the Indian dictating terms sending Angkhan scurrying for covers. The Thai's aggression was frustrated by fast movement of Vijender who swung away from his punches.

The Thai never looked like staging a comeback as Vijender ensured his superiority remains intact and in the end, it turned out to be a facile win for the Indian.

Making most of his height advantage and long reach to unnerve the Thai who looked confounded, Vijender unleashed mostly upper cuts and jabs and the rival had no clue as to what was going.

It was a sweet revenge for Vijender, who had lost to the Thai in the Asian Championship in Ulan Bator, Mongolia, and had to be content with silver.

Researcher says bigfoot just a rubber gorilla suit

Researcher says bigfoot just a rubber gorilla suit
ATLANTA - Turns out Bigfoot was just a rubber suit. Two researchers on a quest to prove the existence of Bigfoot say that the carcass encased in a block of ice — handed over to them for an undisclosed sum by two men who claimed to have found it — was slowly thawed out, and discovered to be a rubber gorilla outfit.

The revelation comes just days after a much ballyhooed news conference was held in California to proclaim that the remains of the creature found in the North Georgia mountains was the legendary man-ape.

Steve Kulls, executive director of squatchdetective.com and host of Squatchdetective Radio, says in a posting on a Web site run by Bigfoot researcher Tom Biscardi that as the "evidence" was thawed, the claim began to unravel as a giant hoax.

First, the hair sample was burned and "melted into a ball uncharacteristic of hair," Kulls said in the posting.

The thawing process was sped up and the exposed head was found to be "unusually hollow in one small section." An hour of thawing later and the feet were exposed — and they were found to be made of rubber.

Matt Whitton, an officer who has been on medical leave from the Clayton County Police Department, and Rick Dyer, a former Georgia corrections officer, announced the find in early July on YouTube videos and a Web site.

"Everyone who has talked down to us is going to eat their words," Whitton said at the time.

Phone calls to Whitton and Dyer went unreturned on Tuesday. But the voicemail recording for their Bigfoot Tip Line — which proclaims they search for leprechauns and the Loch Ness monster — has been updated and announcing they're also in search of "big cats and dinosaurs. If you see any of those, give us a call."

On Tuesday, Clayton County Police Chief Jeff Turner said he has not spoken to Whitton but processed paperwork to fire him.

"Once he perpetrated a fraud, that goes into his credibility and integrity," Turner said. "He has violated the duty of a police officer."

Michael Phelps wins record 8th Olympic gold

CBC Olympics Michael Phelps wins record 8th Olympic gold: "Michael Phelps wins record 8th Olympic gold"

Michael Phelps has gone where no Olympian has gone before.
Phelps swam to his record eighth gold medal of the Beijing Games on Sunday, propelling the U.S. team to a hard-fought victory in the 4x100 medley relay.
With their 23-year-old star pushing them into the lead on the third (butterfly) leg, the Americans touched home in 3:29.34, lowering by 1.34 seconds their own world record set in 2004 in Athens.
"I don't even know what to feel right now," said Phelps, who will return to his hometown of Baltimore, Md., with 14 Olympic golds to his name — five more than anyone else in history.
"There's so much emotion going through my head and so much excitement. I kind of just want to see my mom."
Debbie Phelps sat flanked by her two daughters in the stands at Beijing's National Aquatics Centre, tears streaming down her face after the race and during the ensuing medal ceremony.
Australia took the silver in 3:30.04 after 100 freestyle world-record holder Eamon Sullivan came up short on his bid to catch American Jason Lezak on the anchor leg.
Japan got the bronze in 3:31.18.

Usain Bolt runs 9.68 for World Record in 100m

Usain Bolt (born 20 August 1986) is a Jamaican sprinter, reigning Olympic champion over 100 metres and 100 metres World Record holder. This record gives him the unofficial title of "fastest man on earth". He recorded the current world record at the Beijing Olympics 2008, achieving a time of 9.69 seconds, beating his own time by 0.03 seconds, winning by 0.20 seconds, slowing down and celebrating before the finish.[2] He also is the world junior record holder in the 200 metres (19.93 s), and Jamaican record holder in the 200 metres (19.67 s). His name and achievements in sprinting have earned him the media nickname "Lightning Bolt".

Golden Bolt wins 100 metres in new world record

News - News - Beijing 2008 Olympics - The Times Of India

BEIJING: Usain Bolt of Jamaica won the men's 100 metres Olympic title on Saturday in a new world record time of 9.69 seconds. The 21-year-old - who becomes the first Jamaican to win the Olympic 100m crown - beat home Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago (9.89secs) while Walter Dix of the United States was third in a time of 9.91 seconds. Bolt's compatriot and former world record holder Asafa Powell came fifth as six of the eight finalists finished under 10 seconds, a record for the Olympic final, which also equalled the 1991 world final in Tokyo when six men also finished under the 10 second barrier. Bolt - who bettered compatriot Don Quarrie's silver medal from the 1976 Olympics - was headed by Thompson for the first part of the race but there was no contest once he got into his stride and went clear away from the field. So commanding was his lead he eased up well before the line and held out his hands in celebration. "I felt the world record earlier on," Bolt told the BBC . "I came here just to win and I did just that. I didn't even know I'd broken the world record until I did my victory lap. "Now I'm just concentrating on my two races coming up. I came here prepared and I'm going to try and do it the (100 and 200m double)." Behind him Thompson showed the same impressive form the 23-year-old had displayed during the earlier heats to hold on to second. Meanwhile Dix, also an Olympic debutant, came on strong in the final metres to overhaul Powell, who lost out on fourth place to surprise package Churandy Martina of the Dutch Antilles. Powell admitted he had run out of steam. "My legs died on me. I'm not sure what happened. I'm happy for Usain. I really wanted to get that gold medal. I wasn't ready for the big stage yet," he said. World champion Tyson Gay, out of action for just over a month after suffering a hamstring injury before the Olympics, exited in the semi-finals earlier on Saturday, when he finished fifth.

Boxer Vijender Kumar through to quarter-finals

http://olympics.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/3371397.cms

NEW DELHI: Vijender Kumar beat Thailand's Angkhan Chomphuphuang in the 75kg middle-weight bout to advance to the quarter-finals of boxing competition at the Beijing Olympic Games on Saturday. Vijender beat Angkhan 13:3 in the round of 16 to join two more Indian boxers Akhil Kumar (54kg) and Jitender Kumar (51kg) in the quarter-final stage. Earlier, Vijender Kumar beats Jack Badou of Gambia in the round of 32 to advance to the pre-quarterfinals.

Jitender Kumar - Profile

He represented his native country at two consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 2000 at middleweight. Kumar's birth place is Bhiwani, Haryana.

At the Commonwealth Games 1998 he lost to John Pearce, in 2002 at the semis to Steven Birch.
Nationally he has fought as high as heavyweight.

Beijing, Aug 16 (ANI): Haryana's Jitender Kumar is a step closer to the Olympic medal after defeating his Uzbek counterpart Tulashboy Doniyorov 13-6 in an ill-tempered bout to amble into the quarterfinal of the 51kg event on Saturday.

On his maiden Olympic trip Jitender became the second Indian boxer to put himself just one win away from an Olympic medal.

Jitender will meet three-time European champion Russian Georgy Balakshin in the quarterfinals on August 20.

He had lost to Balakshin in 2007 World Championship by just one point.

While talking of his last defeat to Balakshin, Jitender said, "This time I'm not going to spare him."

"Akhil Kumar has beaten him in the past and I'll ask Akhil how to crack him," he added.

During the bout Jitender showed maturity beyond his years. He landed the first blow on the Uzbek and led 4-1 after the opening round. Having established the lead, he protected it even if constant evading did not look glamorous.

Doniyorov was more attacking of the two, but his inability to connect against a swift-moving Jitender did him in.

Doniyorov went all out in the final two rounds but Jitender spent most of the time, bobbing and weaving. And when he went in, he went with a purpose and the Uzbek could never actually pin him down.

Throught the four rounds Doniyorov managed only four punches on Jitender his other two points came from penalty.

Jitender successfully unleashed 11 blows on the Uzbek that clearly saw him as the winner. (ANI)

Georgia men claim hairy, frozen corpse is Bigfoot - Yahoo! News

Georgia men claim hairy, frozen corpse is Bigfoot - Yahoo! News: "Georgia men claim hairy, frozen corpse is Bigfoot"

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Bigfoot or big fat lie? Whenever someone reports sighting the hairy beast of yore (details always fuzzy) or capturing the hirsute humanoid on film (images always grainy), it scares up a dubious debate of international proportions. Friday was just the latest episode in the Sasquatch show, as unreal as it may be.
Two men who claim to have stumbled across a Bigfoot corpse in the woods of northern Georgia indignantly stood by their story at a news conference in Palo Alto during which they offered an e-mail from a scientist as evidence and acknowledged they wouldn't mind making a few bucks from the "find" they have kept stuffed in a freezer for over a month.
"Everyone who has talked down to us is going to eat their words," predicted Matt Whitton, an officer on medical leave from the Clayton County Police Department.
Whitton and Rick Dyer, a former corrections officer, announced the discovery in early July on YouTube videos and their Web site. Although they did not consider themselves devoted Bigfoot trackers before then, they have since started offering weekend search expeditions in Georgia for $499. The specimen they bagged, the men say, was one of several apelike creatures they spotted cavorting in the woods.
As they faced a skeptical audience of several hundred journalists and Bigfoot fans that included one curiosity seeker in a Chewbacca suit, the pair were joined Friday by Tom Biscardi, head of a group called Searching for Bigfoot. Other Bigfoot hunters call Biscardi a huckster looking for media attention.
Biscardi fielded most of the questions. Among them: Why should anyone accept the men's tale when they weren't willing to display their frozen artifact or pinpoint where they allegedly found it? How come bushwhackers aren't constantly tripping over primate remains if there are as many as 7,000 Bigfoots roaming the United States, as Biscardi claimed?
"I understand where you are coming from, but how many real Bigfoot researchers are out there trekking 140,000 miles a year?" Biscardi said.
Biscardi, Whitton and Dyer presented what they called evidence supporting the Bigfoot theory. It was an e-mail from a University of Minnesota scientist, but all it said was that of the three DNA samples sent to the scientist, one was human, one was likely a possum and the third could not be tested because of technical problems.
At least one other Bigfoot researcher, Idaho State University anthropologist Jeffrey Meldrum, called the trio's claims "not compelling in the least." He told the Scientific American that photographs posted on the Web site "just looks like a costume with some fake guts thrown on top for effect."
Whitton and Dyer have offered three different accounts of how they found the beast's remains.
In early videos, the animal was shot by a former felon, and the men followed it into the woods. In a second version, they found a "family of Bigfoot" in the north Georgia mountains. In the third, the two were hiking and stumbled upon the corpse with open wounds.
In one of their YouTube videos, they are shown speaking with a man they identify as a scientist. Earlier this week, they admitted that the man was Dyer's brother. Dyer said they were simply having fun.
Asked why anyone should believe his claims when he already had shown a flair for tomfoolery, he suggested that skeptics simply are jealous.
"They don't have a choice to believe us. We have a body," Dyer said.

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia (AP)—Thousands of Mongolians hit the streets of the capital to celebrate the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal, offering vodka toasts, blaring their car horns and waving the nation’s flag from the city’s tallest buildings.
Fireworks exploded above Ulan Bator as revelers sang the national anthem after traditional wrestler Tuvshinbayar Naidan’s judo win on Thursday. Naidan, whose nickname is “Tuvshee,” beat Kazakhstan’s Askhat Zhitkeyev in the men’s 100-kilogram class.
“I can’t believe Mongolia just won a gold medal,” said Baljinnyam Dashdorj, 17, celebrating with relatives spanning three generations. “I can’t believe he did it. This is amazing. I’m so happy, I can only jump up and down!”
Mongolia has won medals in wrestling, boxing, shooting and judo at previous games, but never a gold. Gundegmaa Otryad won a silver medal in women’s pistol shooting on Wednesday.
“The first thing I thought of was my parents and my coach,” Naidan said after the victory.
Others thought of history, “We are proud descendants of the great Ghengis Khan, and Tuvshee proved the strength of Mongolians in the Olympics,” said Boldoo, a 24-year-old student.
Families in the isolated country of just 3 million people, sandwiched between China and Russia, had gathered to watch the event. Many in the capital said they would celebrate by downing vodka.
“It is so exciting that our Mongolian flag was raised in Beijing and Tuvshee won in the Judo competition,” said Gerelt-Od, 26, a construction worker. “Me and several of my friends have bought Mongolian vodka to celebrate this wonderful news. It is going to be a very exciting night.”
The crowds flocked to the same central square where in June thousands protested election results and five were killed during riots against police. The unrest prompted President Nambaryn Enkhbayar to declare the country’s first-ever state of emergency.
In an apparent sign of reconciliation, Enkhbayar shook hands with the chairman of the opposition party, the Mongolian Democratic Party, in the square before the two sang the national anthem together.
“Right after the June 29 election, we were in central square protesting election results and throwing stones against policemen and interior troops. … This time we are all here to cheer and support our athletes participating in Beijing Olympics,” said Ganbaatar, 47, who like many Mongolians uses only one name.

Bigfoot Found at Georgia - Claims That Sasquatch Found Dead, Photos, Video Examined

The Bigfoot Press conference is scheduled for Friday. The claim is that two men found this creature they believe is a Sasquatch and they want confirmation that Bigfoot has been found dead. Or this is all a hoax designed for publicity. There are supporters that believe in the legend of the Sasquatch and of course there are countless skeptics that think this is nothing more than a hoax.

Bigfoot Press Conference on Friday

Two men, Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer, claim they found the Bigfoot creature in Georgia. They are claiming that the creature is well over seven-foot tall (7'-7" tall to be exact). In a photo that is published online and linked here in a story by Lynn Edwards you can see eyes and teeth and a bit of the face of the creature.

***

The Bigfoot press conference is scheduled for Friday at high noon on the West Coast which means that the folks in New York will have to wait until 3 p.m. for the big show. Few seem convinced that we have a historic find and the headlines really show that. Today Fox News has this, " Bigfoot Experts Skeptical of Body in Freezer."

The UK Telegraph has this headline, " Bigfoot body 'discovery' dismissed as a hoax." Both stories note that experts believe this is nothing spectacular at all and may be nothing more than a very elaborate hoax.

Michael Phelps

http://www.kansascity.com/449/story/749520.html: "Phelps makes it 6 golds, 6 world records" BEIJING - Proving once again that his only rival is history, Michael Phelps won his sixth gold medal in a sixth world record time. In his second individual medley race of the Games, Phelps pulled away from both Hungarian Laszlo Cseh and teammate Ryan Lochte to touch the wall in 1:54.23 in the 200 IM, bettering the world record he set in the U.S. trials in Omaha in July by 0.57 seconds. Entering the Games, it was considered one of the toughest races for Phelps to win given when it was in the meet (his sixth event) and how close Lochte was to defeating him at the trials. But Lochte, who finished in third with a time of 1:56.53 (.01 seconds behind Cseh) was no competition this time for Phelps, who is on pace to break Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals in one Games. "I just wanted to step on it in the first 50 (meters) a little bit and try to get to an early lead," Phelps said. Lochte, however, did manage a gold on this day, and a world record. The former University of Florida swimmer took back the 200-meter backstroke world record, one that he had shared with Peirsol during the trials, to earn his first individual Olympic gold. Lochte had beaten Peirsol in the 200 back at the 2007 world championships in Melbourne, setting the backstroke world mark at 1:54.32. But Peirsol out-touched Lochte in the U.S. trials, tying Lochte for the record and entering the Games as the favorite to defend both his Athens backstroke golds. But Lochte, who settled for bronze in the 400 individual medley and won gold with the record-breaking 800 free relay team, reclaimed the record to start what many consider the most difficult double any swimmer was attempting at these Games. About a half hour after his 200 back, Lochte faded against Phelps in the 200 IM, possibly as a result of the effort he put in to win backstroke gold. Lochte drew raves in Omaha for pushing both Peirsol and Phelps to world record times in order to edge him out. Phelps was impressed with Lochte's performances within half an hour of each other. "The 200 back is all legs, and for Ryan to come back (30) minutes later and just miss going one-two (in the 200 IM), that's a pretty incredible swim," Phelps said. "That's actually an incredible day for him." Phelps had an impressive double of his own, actually, with the semifinal of the 100-meter butterfly that immediately followed the medal ceremony for the 200 IM. Phelps said he pulled off a quick change right after the ceremony, but still had to improvise some. "I had no time," Phelps said. "My medal was in my warm-up jacket." With his medal hopefully secure in his warm-up pocket, Phelps went on to swim the second-fastest qualifying time in the 100 fly in 50.97, .05 seconds behind Serbian Milorad Cavic. American Ian Crocker tied for the third best time (51.27) in what is expected to be a heated race for Phelps. "Tomorrow is going to be a very tough race," Phelps said after his semi. "If I'm not there at the 50, it's going to be tough. I have to force the first 50 more, and if I'm there it's going to be a good race." Phelps has that final and the 400 IM relay remaining to break Sptiz's record. He now has 12 career gold medals, further distancing himself as the all-time winningest Olympian. Lochte has touted himself as serious competition for Phelps, saying he enters every race against the American icon with the intention of beating him. "That's just how I was raised up," Lochte said before the Games began. "I always feel like I can win, whether it's against Michael Phelps or anyone."

My name is Jack and I am an account manager here at Kontera. Despite what one customer service person has written to you, Google's policy is very clear now (a big change from before) -- since Kontera's product is nothing like Google's in appearance, there is no chance of the user being confused that our ContentLink layer is from Google, so it is allowed. Everyone can make mistakes and clearly, the customer rep at AdSense confused our layer with other companies ad units.Kontera is clearly OK to work on the same pages as AdSense.

Steve Jobs Confirms iPhone Has a Kill Switch - Yahoo! News

Steve Jobs Confirms iPhone Has a Kill Switch - Yahoo! News: "Steve Jobs Confirms iPhone Has a Kill Switch"

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has confirmed that the iPhone 3G has a kill switch that can remotely remove software from the devices.
Jobs told The Wall Street Journal that Apple needs the capability in case it inadvertently allows a malicious program -- such as an application that steals user's personal data -- to be distributed to iPhones through its App Store.
"Hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull," Jobs said.
Switch Not Used
Jobs' statement reveals Apple hasn't used the kill switch yet, but the company did remove an application from the App Store last week.
Apple removed the $999 "I Am Rich" application, which had the sole purpose of showing people the owner has money. The program creates a red icon that sits on the iPhone deck with a the words "I Am Rich" underneath. After the user activates the application, it glows on the handset like a ruby.
Apple initially approved the application, which bumps up against the pricing limit for applications sold on its App Store. The company was not immediately available for comment on why it decided to pull the plug.
Disappearing Acts
But the real controversy started when Jonathan Zdziarski, author of the books iPhone Open Application Development and iPhone Forensics Manual, discovered a URL buried in Apple's firmware. That URL links to a file dubbed "unauthorizedApps" where malicious or simply bad apps might go once they disappear from the App Store.
According to Zdziarski, I Am Rich isn't the only app to disappear. BoxOffice (renamed to Now Playing) and NullRiver's NetShare were also removed. But removing the applications from the App Store and removing them from a consumer's iPhone are two different issues.
"The kill switch is a very controlling gesture. I am not sure why Apple didn't disclose it up front as simply a security measure," said Avi Greengart, an analyst at Current Analysis. "Consumers will accept an awful lot if you let them know what they are accepting."
What Else is Apple Hiding?
In the past, Jobs has said he wants to be careful not to allow applications to bring down the network. Greengart doesn't see that as a major threat, especially since Apple is approving the applications.
However, Greengart said he's less concerned with the "heavy-handed and Big Brotherish" kill switch than the fact that Apple didn't disclose it in the first place. As far as he knows, no other mobile phone has a kill-switch capability.
"To my way of thinking, the issue is that you don't really know what your phone might be doing or not be doing," Greengart said. "I am not 100 percent sure what the capability is or is not. That is the problem. What is the capability? When might they use it? When wouldn't they use it? Is there anything else Apple is not disclosing?"

Indian Mirza retires from singles - Olympics - Yahoo! Sports: "Indian Mirza retires from singles"

BEIJING, Aug 11 (Reuters) - India’s Sania Mirza retired with a wrist injury against Czech Iveta Benesova in the first round of the Olympic tennis event on Monday.
Mirza was trailing 6-2 2-1 when her right wrist became too painful.
“It was hurting before I even came to Beijing but it’s the Olympics so you have to try and give it your best shot,” Mirza told reporters clutching an ice pack.
“The timing is very bad. I’ve been on painkillers for the last six days and took four this morning but what worries me is that I could still feel it with that many painkillers.”
Mirza, who recently had wrist surgery, said she may still try and play doubles with Sunitha Rao. They were given a walkover into the second round when French pair Tatiana Golovin and Pauline Parmentier pulled out after an injury to Golovin.
Mirza’s injury follows the withdrawal of top seed Ana Ivanovic on Sunday with a thumb injury.
American Lindsey Davenport also pulled out of the singles and Russian former world number one Maria Sharapova did not travel to China because of a shoulder injury.

Bindra finished with 700.5 points, edging out Zhu who had 699.7 points for the silver. Zhu won the gold medal in 2004. Hakkinen got the bronze with 699.4.

Zhu's second place finish gives the Chinese three medals in the shooting competition after Guo Wenjun won the women's 10-meter air pistol and Pang Wei took the men's.

Abhinav Bindra clinches India's first gold

Abhinav Bindra clinches India's first gold

ZAGREB: Abhinav Bindra clinched the World Champioship gold, the first ever for the country in shooting, with a spectacular performance in the air rifle final on Monday.
The 23-year-old Delhi lad, a two-time Olympian, went into the final a joint leader with two others at 597, and shot a 102.1 in a nerve-wracking climax to emerge top from a strong field of 122 shooters from nearly 100 countries.
"He needed a 10.4 with his last shot to ensure the gold and he shot a 10.7. It was simply wonderful. To win the Olympic quota place with a World championship gold is fantastic. He has worked hard for it, and fought brilliantly today,'' said National coach Prof. Sunny Thomas.
"I have worked hard for this. It was my day. I have always believed that I could do this and am happy to have done it. I have been in the sport for ten years, and I know that the difference between winning and losing is not much. I didn't do anything very different today,'' said Abhinav, who has been battling with a career-threatening back problem in recent months.
"He was the World junior record holder and now he is the World champion. He is not competing in prone or the 3-position events. He will be consulting doctors in Germany on 27th to decide whether he would need a surgery to solve the back problem. It has been a courageous performance from him considering his physical condition,'' said Prof. Thomas.
Precious talent
For all his precious talent and phenomenal focus on the sport, Abhinav had nothing much to show except for two bronze medals in the World Cups in Germany that he captured in 2001 and 2003. He looked ready to set the record straight in the Athens Olympics when he made the final with a similar 597, but was unlucky not to finish among the medals then, despite shooting close to his best.
Abhinav had shot a miserably 97.6 in the final then. If anything, the bad memories did not dare plague him this time as he shot a spectacular series of 10.3, 10.3, 10.3, 10.0, 10.6, 9.3, 10.9, 9.2, 10.5 and 10.7 to win the gold with a 0.8 point margin.
There have only been two other instances of Indian shooters winning a World championship medal. Dr. Karni Singh had won the trap silver in a World championship in 1962 in Cairo and Lt. Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore had bagged the bronze in the shotgun World Championship in Cyprus in 2003.
Harveen takes bronze
Harveen Srao clinched a bronze medal in air pistol in the junior girls' section. The 20-year-old Chandigarh girl shot 382 out of 400 with a series of 91, 94, 99 and 98. She pipped Antoaneta Boneva of Bulgaria with the same score on the basis of her better last card. But for the poor start, Harveen could have won the gold, that went to Brankica Zaric of Serbia and Montenegro (384).
Quite interestingly, four years back, Shweta Chaudhary, a 16-year-old then, had shot a similar 382 in the World championship at Lahti, Finland, but had missed the medal on the count-back.
Shweta this time finished 25th with 374, following a sequence of 92, 93, 96 and 93 while Fatima Nausheen ended up 36th with 370.
The Indian junior girls finished fifth with 1126 and missed a medal by four points.
The Indian junior boys, however, did well to bag the country's first team medal in a World championship, by clinching the bronze in air pistol.
Amanpreet Singh (575), Bapu Vanjare (571) and Zakir Khan (570) missed the silver by one point to Russia. The trio was capable of challenging China for the gold, but Zakir was not his usual self.
Seniors disappoint
The senior marksmen Samaresh Jung, finished 31st in a strong field of 134 with 576. He shot a series of 96, 96, 98, 96, 95 and 95. Vivek Singh was one point behind but was pushed to the 44th slot while Ronak Pandit was 98th with 566.
Chinese Pang Wei, the 20-year-old won the gold and crowned himself as the World champion in his maiden international appearance.
The results:
Men: 10m air rifle: 1. Abhinav Bindra 699.1 (597); 2. Alin George Moldoveanu (Rom) 698.3 (597); 3. Zhu Qinan (Chn) 697.9 (595); 31. Gagan Narang 592; 37. Sanjeev Rajput 591.

Abhinav Bindra Profile - Indian Shooter Abhinav Bindra Biography - Information on Abhinav Bindra: "Abhinav Bindra Profile"
Achievements: Made a junior world record score of 597/600 in 2001 Munich World Cup and won bronze; gold in 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games; became the first Indian shooter to win a World Championship gold; Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2001.
Abhinav Bindra is the brightest star among a new breed of talented Indian shooters. Born on September 28, 1983, Bindra is quite often criticized for not delivering on the promise he showed as a child prodigy.
Coming from an affluent family and with the luxury of an indoor range in his backyard, Bindra proved to an early bird and, at 15, was the youngest participant at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. Bindra shot into limelight by winning a bronze in the 2001 Munich World Cup with a new junior world record score of 597/600.
In the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, competing in his pet Air rifle event, Bindra won Gold in the Pairs event and Silver in the individual event. During a purple patch, Bindra won six gold medals at various international meets in the European Circuit in 2001. He was conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for the year 2001.
In the 2004 Athens Olympics, despite breaking the Olympic record Bindra failed to win a medal. But on July 24, 2006, Bindra became the first Indian shooter to win a World Championship gold in Zagreb. Dr. Karni Singh's silver in 1962 was the previous best by an Indian in a World Championship meet.

Laura Branigan - Self Control

"oh the night is my world
city life painted girls
in a day nothing matters
it's the night time that flatters
oh the night no control
through the wall something breakin'
wearin' white as you're walkin'
down the streets of my soul

you take my self you take my self control
you got me livin' only for the night
before the morning comes the story's told
you take my self you take my self control
another night another day goes by
i never stop myself to wonder why
you're makin' me forget to play my role
you take my self you take my self control

i i live among the creatures of the night
i haven't got the will to try and fight
against a new tomorrow
so i guess i just believe it that this night will never go
night i'm livin' in a moment of a dream
i know that life is not as it would seem
i must believe in something
so i make myself believin' that this night will never go

oh the night is my world
city life painted girls
in a day nothing matters
it's the night time that falatters

you take my self...

i said i i live among the creatures of the night
i haven't got the will to try and fight
against a new tomorrow
so i guess i just believe it that tomorrow never knows"

Motorola names Sanjay Jha head of handset division: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance

Motorola names Sanjay Jha head of handset division: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance: "Motorola names Sanjay Jha head of handset division"
NEW YORK (AP) -- Motorola Inc. on Monday said it had snagged Sanjay Jha, the chief operating officer of Qualcomm Inc. and a star of the wireless industry, to head its handset division as it prepares to become an independent company.

Jha will also be co-chief executive of the parent company, sharing the responsibility with incumbent Greg Brown. Brown will take responsibility for Motorola's other two divisions.
Motorola shares rose 84 cents, or 9.5 percent, to $9.65 in morning trading.
Goldman Sachs analysts Simona Jankowski and Thomas Lee called the recruitment of Jha, who was also president of the Qualcomm division that made chips for cell phones, "a big win" for Motorola and a loss for Qualcomm.
"We believe he is very well respected both in industry and in the investor community," the analysts wrote. "From Motorola's perspective, we expect this will improve the company's competitive positioning faster than if an executive of lesser stature had been attracted as CEO."
Citigroup analyst Jim Suva concurred, writing that "We are hard-pressed to imagine a better candidate than Dr. Jha." Jha, 45, has a doctorate in electronic and electrical engineering.
Qualcomm shares fell $1.88, or 3.4 percent, to $53.59.
Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola's handset division has been posting heavy losses for the last few years. Brown has controlled the unit directly since early this year. Stu Reed, its last president, left the company in March.
Also in March, Motorola said it would split off the cell-phone division from the ones that make set-top boxes, cable modems, police radios and other telecommunications gear.
The handset unit had a smash hit with the Razr phone in 2004 and 2005, but has been unable to produce a follow-up of the same popularity. However, Motorola last week announced that it had reversed a trend of declining sales and shipped 28.1 million cell phones in the second quarter, up from 27 million in the first.
Motorola executives have emphasized the complex nature of the spin-off, saying that the handset unit shares 150 facilities with other units, and analysts have questioned whether it's worth the expense. Last week, Motorola said the process should be complete by the third quarter next year.
Jha will receive 3.7 million restricted Motorola stock units, worth approximately $35 million at Monday's stock price, and options to buy 16.6 million shares. If the spin-off of the handset division is completed, those awards would apply to the new company's stock, and Jha would receive additional stock and option awards to give him a 3 percent stake in the company.
If the spin-off does not happen before Oct. 31, 2010, Jha will get $30 million in cash.
At Qualcomm, executive vice president Len Lauer, formerly the chief operating officer of Sprint Nextel Corp., replaces Jha as COO. Jha's position as president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, or QCT, will be filled by the EVP of the unit, Steve Mollenkopf.
